Assistive technology is also referred to as aids and equipment, and can range from simple household items to complex pressure care, mobility and smart technology. Assistive technology categories are based on complexity, risk and cost. Occupational Therapists can provide expert advice, arrange trials wiht suppliers, prescription and assist with Government funding applications.
Occupational Therapists are experts in functional assessment, knowledgeable in assistive technology and can arrange trials, assess and prescribe items and coordinate funding options. Assistive technology can assist with self care, mobility, communication, learning, participation in work / social activities, independence, safety and overall quality of life.
There are multiple Government schemes, such as the NDIS, State equipment schemes (NSW Heath Enable and Qld Medical Aids Subsidy Scheme) and the DVA Rehab Appliance Program (RAP) that provide funding support. Occupational Therapists understand the various funding schemes and can assist people with disability, health conditions and aging to access appropriate assistive technology.
Occupational Therapists will consider your individual situation and NDIA requirements, to ensure items are appropriate to your clinical needs. More information available at:
